Golden Ceremony: UNICARIBE celebrated its 50th Graduation

Santo Domingo, December 9, 2023.- Some 542 students received their professional degrees at the recent graduation ceremony of the University of the Caribbean (UNICARIBE), the institution’s 50th, a historic event that symbolizes the institution’s leadership in research, innovation and inclusive academic training, both locally and internationally.
“UNICARIBE fulfills its functions in the education and training of students and contributes to the country’s higher education. With today’s graduates, we reach a total of 2,148 this year, of which 57% have been women,” said the university’s academic rector, Dr. Emilio Mínguez, in his keynote address at the ceremony.
He emphasized that the academy is a benchmark in the preparation of highly trained professionals committed to the progress of the country. These new graduates are the tangible result of the joint efforts of the university, the faculty and the entire university community, whose hard work and dedication promise to further promote the growth and positive transformation of Dominican society.
Likewise, Dr. Mínguez emphasized the renovation of the university’s technological platforms, the concern for environmental sustainability and sustainability “committed to people and society, focused on human respect”.
The 542 professionals have graduated in Business Administration, Hotel Administration, Accounting, Marketing, Computer Science, Cybersecurity Engineering, Network and Telecommunications Engineering, Software Engineering, International Relations, Law, Clinical Psychology, Basic Education, Social Sciences Education, Early Childhood Education, Modern Languages Education, Mathematics and Physics Education, Chemistry and Biology Education, and Second Cycle Primary Education.
Agents of transformation
Ysabel Jiménez, a graduate of the Clinical Psychology program at this ceremony, obtained the highest grade of her entire graduating class, achieving the outstanding distinction of summa cum laude.
For this achievement, she received a special recognition and a ring presented by the president of the Board of Directors, José Alejandro Aybar M., together with the vice-president of the Board of Directors, Shahily Pimentel; Dr. Emilio Mínguez and Dr. Abril Arias, president of the Dominican College of Psychologists.
In addition, as an additional recognition to her academic performance, the Fundación Educación Educativa del Caribe granted her the total reimbursement of her tuition payment, amounting to RD$195,200.00; also RD$100 thousand from Banco BDI, with the purpose of supporting her growth and development plans as a new professional.
“I must congratulate you; here at UNICARIBE, we make a great effort in the quality of education for all of you. For some time now, we have been giving back to the student with the highest academic index everything invested in the university, in addition to the 100,000 pesos granted by the BDI Bank. I urge all of you not to be just one more, but to always make a difference,” said José Alejandro Aybar M., Chancellor of UNICARIBE.
“As I close this chapter, I look to the future with hope and determination. As a clinical psychologist, I take on the responsibility to be an agent of change. I pledge to be a tireless advocate for mental health, to challenge stigmas and to foster an environment where empathy flourishes and remains, starting with each and every one of those present here,” said the new professional, during her speech of gratitude, on behalf of the 542 graduates.
UNICARIBE’s fiftieth regular graduation began with the playing of the Dominican National Anthem and the university’s anthem, followed by the words of thanks to the Lord, expressed by Reverend Deacon Father Juan Rivas, in honor of the investiture of the new professionals. In addition to Abril Arias, among the guests of honor was Dr. Juan Francisco Viloria, Vice Minister of Evaluation and Accreditation of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
The event concluded with the graduates taking the collective oath, committing themselves to practice their professions with the ethical values promoted by the academic institution and for the benefit of society.
UNICARIBE remains focused on expanding and innovating its academic offerings for the country’s students through strategic collaborations with renowned international institutions. Recently, the institution initiated the Constitutional Education course free of charge and signed several agreements with national and regional institutions to strengthen its academic curriculum in various disciplines; among them, the agreements signed with the Constitutional Court of the Republic, the Dominican College of Psychologists, the Superintendence of Pensions and the National Union of Local Governments of Costa Rica.
In 2023, the Universidad del Caribe hosted the prestigious regional summit on higher education organized by the global consulting firm QS Quacquarelli Symonds, after which the institution was distinguished by the organizing entity as a leader in positioning management of universities in the Americas.
